Pushy Parents Jeopardise Their Children's Futures
2007-08-20 | IT & Digital York
One in five young people think they have been led down the wrong educational path, with almost half (42 per cent) of these being misdirected by their own parents. The figures were released by educational foundation, Edge, today as it announced a major TV and press advertising campaign aimed at tackling 'academic snobbery' and asking parents to consider all educational and work routes to success for their children. Many parents are influenced by ingrained prejudices against vocational qualifications (tailored towards a particular career), with 35 per cent believing that vocational learning is just for people who don't do well at school.
But despite this belief, Edge's research has found that parents don't fully understand the wide range of learning opportunities available to young people through further education, Apprenticeship, and jobs which offer workplace learning and vocational degrees.
